Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Winter Park, Florida

This
great church was organized at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Charles Ambrose on
Pennsylvania Avenue In 1886. In 1888, the Trustees of Mt. Moriah Missionary
Baptist Church (Charles Ambrose. Zachariah Jinlack and others) purchased two
lots on the corners of Lyman And Pennsylvania Avenues from the Winter Park
Company. for the sum of $55. As such, we were the first baptist church to be
organized and established In Winter Park. Mt.
Moriah called its first pastor, Rev. C. J. Smith, in 1887. He was moderator of
the South Florida Association.
Under Rev. Smith's leadership, Mt. Moriah joined the Association In 1910 at its
22nd Annual Session. The
first choir in Mt. Moriah (Choir NO.1) was organized In 1913; In 1932, Choir
No.2, 1933, Usher Board No.1. A
gift of $10,000 from William Courser, in 1935, enabled the church to build its
present sanctuary. Rev. I. C. Nimmons was the pastor. Under his leadership
several events took place. The Missionary Society, Junior Church and the Junior
Choir were organized. In
1941. Mt. Moriah called its eighth pastor, Rev. L.A. Pelham. Under his
leadership Mt. Moriah became an every-Sunday Church. During this tenure, the
church raised nearly five-thousand dollars ($5,000) to build a parsonage and buy
new pews. Rev.
K. S. Wilson, the ninth pastor, was called in 1946.The Junior Church was
reorganized, The Junior Women Mission Society was organized In the early 1950s.
This group later became Mission Number Two. Usher Board No.2 was organized In
1954. The church annex and parsonage were built in 1959. In
later years renovations of the church and annex took place. The choir stand was
enlarged, restrooms were built, new lights were installed and a new kitchen
was built in the annex. The entrance to the church was completely remodeled and
a communion room was built. The
Young Adult Choir (The Inspirational Choir) was organized In 1959. A new Junior
Women Missionary Society was organized in 1971. Because
of the church's Increased size and need for more space, a new parsonage was
created on Swoope Avenue. The old parsonage now houses a workroom for the
church's secretary, pastor's study, a library, nursery, and Sunday School rooms.
Rev.
C.R. Taylor was called in 1982. Several programs were initiated under Rev.
Taylor's tenure. A Christian Education director, tutorial program, bus ministry,
Male Chorus were created. A nursery was organized under the Junior Women. A
total of 16 auxiliaries worked together to minister in the name of Jesus Christ.
Today,
Mt. Moriah follows the leadership of Its eleventh pastor, Rev. A. C. Cobb.
Serving in the capacity of Associate Ministers are: Reverends. Hayward
Cleveland, Robert Smith, Ronald Sutton, and Minister James Woods. Rev. Cobb has
reactivated the Junior Mission Society, the Church Council. and the Nursery.
Several renovations have been done to the present structure which Includes the
kitchen and new seats and carpet in the choir stand. With
continued support Mt. Moriah will always be a landmark In Winter Park both prayerfully
and spiritually. We have traveled far. one hundred twenty (120) years (1886-2006),
we shall continue in unity.
